Medical Assistance in Media Center for 2002 World Cup Game

The International Media Center, which was made up of an International Broadcast Center and a Main Press Center for 2002 Worldcup Soccer Games, was established and maintained in Seoul, South Korea covering approximately 12,000 press personnels and related persons. Medical aid station in the International Media Center was established and operated for 45 days around the Worldcup times. The characteristics and medical data in medical aid station were analyzed. Data were collected from preformed special medical records for the medical aid. One thousand visitors visited the medical aid station for 45 days and it shows average 22.2 visits per day. Sixty eight percents of visitors were the first visitors and foreigners occupied 59% of total visitors. There was no serial increase of numbers or rate of visitors except revisits. Except second decade of age, number of male visitors was larger than females, and all visitors were male especially after 60 years of age. Sore throat was characteristic chief complaints of visitors working in the media center. Rate of injured patients were 19.6% and maximal number of injured patients appeared in 5th decade male. Eighty nine percents of all visitors were discharged and 2.3% were transfered. Among treatments except medication, dressing(11%) was the most common treatment. Twenty six percents of visitors got oral medication. Medical assistance for media center in large sports events have different characteristics compared to other medical assistance for sports events. Preparedness and planning should be different and suitable for the patterns of visitors. It will be necessary to study more cases for characterizing various patterns of visitors in media center.
